the conference is mostly over (some post stuff for other folks, not me) and today is tourtourtour until the plane leaves at 5pm. I scheduled tours with hikes figuring folks would self select and it would be good. I didn't figure that I wouldn't sleep well last night (it's 4:30am here) and the tour leaves at 6am.
I don't think I've ever been to a 4 day conference with 2 keynotes a day, and 3 sessions in addition and every time slot having something worth going to. it's been like a graduate seminar with all of the people who wrote the articles right there in the room. 35 countries were represented -- maybe 175 people? really really powerful.
in addition, exciting news on the manuscript-that-I-have-been-forbidden-to-use front: a graduate student got access to it! we aren't sure yet what this might mean (maybe nothing, but still it's the first access granted in 5 years). how odd it is that I spoke on this topic for the first time in a really really long time. I knew the grad student had been requesting it: her advisor asked me for advice in getting access. I sent them phone numbers of family members who might be on the side of sharing. I'll be interested in seeing how this plays out!
I'm ready to be home. I miss the folks there.
online teaching is really hard from a distance. I kept the computer on central time so I could see what time the class was operating under, but still, I missed a few important deadlines. more a function of sleep deprivation. maybe in another day or two I would have finally been in sync.
well, I'm off to see the sunrise. back home tomorrow am after an all-night flight.
I'm wishing you a good overnight flight... with an empty seat beside you!!
